New Reflection Transformation Imaging Methods for Rock Art and Multiple-Viewpoint Display

چکیده
We offer two new methods of documenting and communicating cultural heritage information using Reflection Transformation Imaging (RTI). One imaging method is able to acquire Polynomial Texture Maps (PTMs) of 3D rock art possessing a large range of sizes, shapes, and environmental contexts. Unlike existing PTM capture methods requiring known light source positions, we rely on the user to position a handheld light source, and recover the lighting direction from the specular highlights produced on a black sphere included in the field of view captured by the camera. The acquisition method is simple, fast, very low cost, and easy to learn. A complementary method of integrating digital RTI representations of subjects from multiple viewpoints is also presented. It permits RTI examination “in the round” in a unified, interactive, image-based representation. Collaborative tests between Cultural Heritage Imaging, HewlettPackard Labs, and the UNESCO Prehistoric Rock-Art Sites in the Côa Valley, a World Heritage Site in Portugal, suggest this approach will be very beneficial when applied to paleolithic petroglyphs of various sizes, both in the field and in the laboratory. These benefits over current standards of best practice can be generalized to a broad range of cultural heritage material. Polynomial Texture Mapping at Roughting Linn Rock Art Site
This study tests the feasibility of using Polynomial Texture Map (PTM) recording technology at Roughting Linn rock art site. Additionally, it examines the added value of incorporating PTM into the existing record of the rock carvings. Finally, it explores the application of PTM as a tool to enhance the understanding of cultural significance of the ancient site. A Polynomial Texture Map (PTM) is...
متن کاملRock mass structural characterization via short-range digital photogrammetry
Because of the important role of rock mass structural properties on its mechanical behavior, determining the qualitative and quantitative properties of has been a subject of intense research. In this regard, numerous techniques such as scanline surveying, cell mapping, and geologic structure mapping have been proposed. However, applying such field surveying techniques for rock mass properties i...

متن کاملA state-of-the-art review of mechanical rock excavation technologies
The first step in mining activities is rock excavation in both mine development and production. Constant pressure for cost reduction and creating an improved/safe work environment for personnel has naturally resulted in increased use of mechanical excavation systems in many mining operations. Also, mechanical excavation and mining is more compatible with automation, meaning possibility of reduc...
متن کاملAn improvement in RTM method to image steep dip petroleum bearing structures and its superiority to other methods
In this paper, first the limitations of the ray-based method and the one-way wave-field extrapolation migration (WEM) in imaging steeply dipping structures are discussed by some examples. Then a new method of the reverse time migration (RTM), used in imaging such complex structures is presented. The proposed method uses a new wave-field extrapolator called the Leapfrog-Rapid Expansion Method (L...
